The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Professor Akin Abayomi, has disclosed that the State government is set to begin mass production of face masks.
The State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi said the State Governor (Mr. Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu) has approved the mass production of standard designs of face masks recommended to local (indigenous) tailors and seamstresses by the State Government at a briefing on the situation report of COVID-19 in the State.
He said: “Tailors and seamstresses are empowered to produce and provide standard homemade face mask that the public can gain access to and wear without pulling on the limited stocks of professional face masks that health professional require such that in a couple of weeks, we will be able to mass-produce locally made face masks not medical masks”.
He (Commissioner for Health) stressed that wearing of face masks does not protect against COVID-19 Infection, but rather protects people around an infected person from contacting the virus from coughing or sneezing of an infected person.
Theoretical evidence has proved that wearing of face masks may indeed reduce the number of droplets in the environment from COVID-19 infected person, that is the reason the State Government comes up with the strategy of face masks for the general community, Prof. Abayomi.
The State Government will use all possible ways available for the well-being and staying alive of her citizens.
