LASG LAUDS CONTRIBUTIONS OF TBAs TO HEALTHCARE DELIVERY AT GRASSROOTS
Lagos State Government has lauded the contributions of Traditional Birth Attendants, TBAs to healthcare delivery at the grassroots, describing them as strategic partners in the provision of universal health coverage for residents of the State.
The Permanent Secretary, of Lagos Primary Health Care Board, Dr. Ibrahim Akinwumi Mustafa, stated during a skills enhancement training program for Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the Ifako and Ojokoro areas of the State.
The skills enhancement training program organized by Abiye Maternal and Child Health International Foundation, Sub Saharan Health Solutions Nigeria Limited, and Voice of Children Foundation, was to bolster the primary healthcare sector by providing essential training to these vital healthcare stakeholders.
Dr. Mustafa said that the Lagos Primary Health Care Board (PHCB) collaborated with these strategic partners to enhance the skills of Traditional Birth Attendants (TBAs) in the Ifako and Ojokoro Wards of Ifako-Ijaige Local Government Area of the State.
Speaking at the event which took place at the Vetland Primary School Agege, the Permanent Secretary, who was represented by the Director of Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr. Tope Balogun, highlighted the pivotal role TBAs play in the primary healthcare system and their importance for community well-being, particularly in maternal and child health.
He stated, “The training of Traditional Birth Attendants is a critical component of our broader strategy to strengthen primary healthcare services. We recognize the importance of their role in delivering essential maternal and newborn care at the community level.”
He, however, urged the trainees to diligently apply the knowledge gained during the training, emphasizing the need to adhere strictly to the principles and practices acquired.
Mustafa told the trainees that their dedication to best practices would significantly contribute to improving healthcare outcomes within communities.
